Buick pairs this engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission. As a result, this powertrain delivers 310 horsepower, 266 pound-feet of torque, and tows up to 5,000 pounds. 

Buick’s switchable all-wheel-drive (AWD) system works automatically. When the system senses a loss of traction, it diverts power to the wheels that can use it most, thus enabling you to traverse slippery and snow-covered roads and other soft surfaces. On dry roads, the AWD system enhances cornering ability and improves acceleration.

Now, Buick offers a Trailering Package that includes the hitch and wiring installation, plus a hitch guidance system to help you back up to your trailer. This system sends a live feed from behind you with a precise view of your trailer hitch and grid lines to help you with steering and distance.

GMC Acadia Performance

GMC offers two engine options on the Acadia. On the two lower trims, you have a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine. You get a capable front-wheel-drive system on the Denali, SLT, and SLE models, with the option to add all-wheel-drive for more traction and control. In addition, the off-road-inspired Acadia AT4 trim comes only in all-wheel-drive. This intelligent system monitors your Acadia’s throttle, steering, torque, and wheel spin to determine where to send power in low-traction situations. You also have selectable drive modes to tune your performance to the road further. All-wheel-drive is available on every Acadia trim.

Driver-Assist Technologies

Both vehicles come with a suite of driver-assist systems designed to improve safety and elevate your driving experience. As GMC’s midsize SUV, the 2022 Acadia can seat either six or seven passengers depending on how you configure the second row. With a second-row bench, your capacity is seven people, but this is reduced to six with the added luxury provided by captain’s chairs.

The base Acadia features cloth upholstery in the cabin. The front two rows offer ample headroom and legroom for passengers of all sizes. Even the third row is suitable for adult passengers to ride on short trips, and for kids or teenagers on longer drives. If you need to install kids’ chairs, you’ll find two sets of LATCH connectors on the outermost seats in the second row, as well as tether anchors in the third row.

Cargo Storage

If you’re carrying a full cabin of passengers, you’ll find 12.8 cubic feet of storage behind the third row. That’s enough to carry your family’s groceries or a few larger luggage bags.

In case you need to haul some larger items, you can open up over 41 cubic feet of storage with the third row of seats folded down. The Acadia’s cargo-carrying capacity maxes out at 79 cubic feet with both rear rows folded flat.

Beyond its cargo storage options in the cabin, the Acadia can tow up to 4,000 pounds at the rear. That’s more than enough for a modest-sized camper or boat for a vacation trip.

Infotainment and Technology

You can control the Acadia’s wide range of entertainment features through an 8-inch screen and listen to your favorite music through a six-speaker stereo. Other standard infotainment features include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which allow you to link your smartphone with the Acadia’s screen.

The Acadia is equipped with a number of additional connectivity features. These include Bluetooth, a wireless hot spot, and several USB ports. You can upgrade to wireless device charging so it’s even easier to keep your devices fully charged while you’re on the go.

Another useful infotainment upgrade is the rear-seat entertainment system. This system provides rear-seat passengers with their own entertainment screen so they can select music or videos to watch during the drive. It’s an ideal option if you want something to keep your kids occupied.

Driver Assistance and Safety

On top of a roomy cabin and extensive entertainment offerings, the Acadia comes with a long list of standard driver safety features. Forward collision warning paired with pedestrian detection enable the Acadia to alert you when an obstacle is detected up ahead. If you fail to take evasive action soon enough, the automatic emergency braking system kicks in to bring your SUV to a stop.

Parking assistance is provided by front and rear parking sensors, and a rear cross traffic alert feature that alerts you when vehicles approach from the side while you’re in reverse. Teen Driver allows you to set speed limits and impose other restrictions on how your Acadia is used to help young drivers learn safely.

You can select from several optional features to experience GMC’s full range of driver safety technology. The surround-view parking camera displays an aerial view of your Acadia so that you can maneuver into a parking spot while monitoring potential threats from all angles. Adaptive cruise control keeps track of the distance between your Acadia and other vehicles up ahead on the highway, and adjusts your speed to ensure a steady drive.

Trims

There are four trims to choose from in the Acadia’s 2022 lineup, and they all come with unique aspects to their interior features. The four trims are SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali.

The base SLE trim has cloth upholstery, the standard infotainment setup, and  a tri-zone climate control system. If you opt for the Driver Convenience package, you can add a power-adjustable driver’s seat and heated front seats. Another optional upgrade package gives you access to an eight-speaker premium stereo and a navigation system.

The SLT trim adds a bit more luxury to the cabin with leather upholstery. The optional upgrades included in the Driver Convenience package come standard in the SLT. You can opt for some optional add-ons, including a power-adjustable passenger’s seat, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats.

If you’re looking for high amounts of torque, the turbocharged 2.8-liter diesel four-cylinder engine will deliver it to you, as it can produce 369 pound-feet of torque. 

As you would expect from a larger truck, the 2022 Sierra 1500 has a more powerful engine lineup than the Canyon. Its standard engine is a turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-4 that was only available as an option for previous model years and which can produce up to 310 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Other notable engine choices are the 5.3-liter V-8 with 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque and the 6.2-liter V-8 with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The diesel version is a turbocharged inline-6 with 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. 

Performance 

When equipped with the V-6, the 2022 GMC Canyon has a maximum tow rating of 7,700 pounds, which is one of the best in its midsize pickup category. The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500’s maximum tow rating is an impressive 13,200 pounds, making it more suitable for heavy-duty loading. Both trucks also deliver excellent acceleration performance. The Canyon’s V-6 helps it reach a speed of 60 miles per hour from a complete standstill in 6.9 seconds, while the Sierra 1500’s V-8 pushes it from zero to 60 in 6.2 seconds. Both these times are impressive for vehicles this large.

Interior Comfort and Technology

The 2022 GMC Canyon’s interior is smartly designed and effective. There’s plenty of space for driver and passengers, regardless of their size, and the large windshield provides excellent visibility. Its infotainment system is intuitive and easy to use, with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and additional smartphone connectivity options through two USB ports and Bluetooth. The standard sound system delivers good audio quality, but audiophiles can choose the optional Bose system. A 4G LTE Wi-Fi system is also available.

The 2022 Sierra takes full advantage of the size difference and offers exceptional amounts of space to all passengers. The 13.4-inch touch-screen interface is standard for all trims except the base one and gives the dashboard a high-tech look. Both the Canyon and the Sierra 1500 are exceptionally well-equipped when it comes to active safety systems. Some of the most useful on the 2022 Canyon are the forward-collision warning system, which alerts the driver in case of an imminent frontal impact and hits the brakes to mitigate the impact, and the lane-departure warning system, which alerts the driver if the truck begins drifting out of its lane. The 2022 Sierra will take things one step further and use the Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance system, which offers complete autonomy under certain circumstances. 

Verdict

When comparing the 2022 GMC Canyon and GMC Sierra, the right choice greatly depends on what you intend to do with it. The smaller Canyon is the ideal truck for those who plan on using it extensively as a personal means of transportation, as its more compact frame and excellent agility make it more suitable for everyday use. The Sierra 1500, on the other hand, is a heavy-duty powerhouse that’s capable of carrying huge loads and, while not unsuitable for everyday use, tends to be a more professional work truck. 

The line between personal vehicles and those used for work is getting narrower every year and the GMC Canyon and Sierra are excellent examples of this.
