Virginia’s a playground for outdoor lovers, whether you’re into hiking, biking, golfing, or a day out on a fast-paced boat. Looking to head outside and have some fun while taking in the fresh air? Take a look at some of the adventures you can have while spending your time in Woodbridge.

Leesylvania State Park

Nestled right along the shores of the Potomac River, the Leesylvania State Park offers many opportunities for having fun on land and water. This 500-acre peninsula gives you the chance to just hike and walk around, have a nice gentle picnic, or take your kids to a nearby playground. If you’re the type to head out on the river, it offers a pier specifically for fishing and a place to store your boat. It also offers canoe and kayak rentals for a change of boating pace.

This area is a historic landmark filled with a rich past, and the park gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in it. The visitor center details the historic houses and nature that’s been in the area for thousands of years, and the park offers ranger programs throughout the season for those interested in exploration and animal observations.

Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge

The Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge gives you the chance to enjoy nature all year round. Established in June 1998, it’s a habitat specifically tailored for migratory birds and endangered species. It’s filled with diverse grassland, marsh, and forest habitats that attract a diverse variety of native flora and fauna. This leads to over 642 acres of visiting areas that encourage various wildlife-related recreational activities, like wildlife observation, photography, and education. There are established roads for hiking, biking, and driving, so you’ll have various ways of enjoying the joy of nature.

Neabsco Regional Park

The Neabsco Regional Park has over 300 acres of natural, educational, recreational, and historic sites, so you’ll find something that’s just right for your hobbies. You can walk through the Neabsco Creek Boardwalk, which is the perfect place to see some of Virginia’s local birds, including blue herons, wood ducks, mallards, sparrows, and red-winged blackbirds. Head towards the end, and you’ll find a beautiful view of the Potomac waterfront. 

You can then head up the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, which gives you an 800-mile network of history, culture, and natural beauty. This lets you end your day at Rippon Landing, which offers a picnic area with grills and a pavilion that can fit up to 25 people.

Kane’s Creek

The Kane’s Creek and Eagle Spur trails are open year-round, giving you access to trails right nearby Woodbridge. It lets you hike, run, or walk in an area that gives you a great view of the nearby bay. You even walk straight to the Mason Neck State Park, which expands your itinerary to a large picnic area, a playground, and a visitor center with canoes and kayak rentals. A pleasant trailhead that gives you the chance to enjoy some solitude and maybe even a few bald eagles along the way.

Northern Virginia Sailing School

The Northern Virginia Sailing School is directly on the lower Potomac River right here in Woodbridge. Open since 2010, it offers multiple chances at American sailing certifications. There are specialized classes for all levels of sailing experience, and captains are always available to take groups out for rides around the river. Head to the sailing school and become a professional sailor today.

Old Hickory Golf Club

The Old Hickory Golf Club is a premier upscale golf course that all levels of golfers will enjoy. It’s a challenging green with lots of creeks to cross and sights to see, with beautiful scenery that is sure to impress and provide you and any friends you bring with many memorable moments. It’s a world-class course that preserves the true beauty that Woodbridge offers. They even offer events such as tournament cups and shambles that let you enjoy the sport with other like-minded individuals.

Aqua Rentals

To get an adventure on the harbor like never before, head right over to Aqua Rentals. They offer excursion packages that include the opportunity to speed through the waves of the Potomac River on a jet ski. No experience is necessary, as they offer a safety course to get anyone familiar with the water and the jet skis. Professional guides are also available for people who don’t want to ride alone. Rental packages include renting a go-pro camera, which will let you get direct first-person footage and create permanent memories of your time on the water.

Waterworks Waterpark

The Waterworks Waterpark gives you an oasis on a hot summer day. It features a climbing facility, multiple water sprays and slides, water obstacles, wading pools, and a shallow beach area. Your visits can be tailored to any kind of group, from areas made specifically for families and children to a shaded shore lounge cabana area for the adults who want some casual tiki drinks. And to take a break from the water, there’s a softball and baseball field right behind the water park itself.

Hammill Mill Park

In the summer, a perfect little place to swim in is at Hammill Mill Park. This community pool is amazing and is great to visit as a lone swimmer or along with a family. It’s nice and clean and has a friendly staff that keeps the place nice and well maintained. On top of the pool, play a little basketball, let your kids wild on the playground or have a picnic with a view of the creek.
