Subcompact SUVs have become increasingly popular in the past few years for their ability to balance space and off-road capability. The Buick Encore and Encore GX are no exception, with both models boasting excellent performance, fuel economy, and safety ratings. In this article, we compare the 2023 Encore GX and the 2022 Encore to help you decide which model is right for you.

Overview

Unfortunately, 2022 is the last model year of the original Encore, but it’s still a good option for those looking for a reliable and stylish subcompact SUV. The Encore GX is a newer model introduced in 2019 and has enjoyed yearly releases since then. There are minimal changes in the 2023 Encore GX compared to its predecessors. What’s worth noting, however, is that a 1.2-liter engine is again available for this newest entry to the Encore GX lineup.

Exteriors

While the two models are visually similar, the 2023 GX is slightly larger than the 2022 Encore. It also has a longer wheelbase and a higher clearance. Both vehicles sport 18-inch aluminum wheels, but you can get the GX with exclusive wheels that feature distinct finishes and designs for a more stylish look. These models are also equipped with standard LED headlights and running daytime lights, and you may opt for roof rack rails for additional storage space. A custom grille, sport bumpers, and a black roof complemented by black mirrors and rails are available upgrades.

The 2022 Encore comes in six colors: White Frost Tricoat, Cinnabar Metallic, Dark Moon Blue Metallic, Summit White, Ebony Twilight Metallic, and Quicksilver Metallic. The 2023 Encore GX offers eight options. Your choices include the same Summit White, Cinnabar Metallic, Ebony Twilight Metallic, and White Frost Tricoat as the 2022 model. The GX adds Sapphire Metallic, Rosewood Metallic, Moonstone Gray Metallic, and Sunset Glow Metallic to the lineup.

Trim Levels

The 2022 Buick Encore only comes with the base Preferred trim level. You can choose between a front-wheel drive or an all-wheel drive configuration. The 2023 Encore GX, on the other hand, comes in three trims. These are Preferred, which is the base trim level, and Select and Essence. The latter two trims offer more safety and convenience features and better entertainment options and tech elements for a higher price.

Power and Performance

The 1.4-liter turbocharged engine with a six-speed automatic transmission powers the 2022 Encore. This engine produces 153 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration is respectable for a subcompact SUV, with Car and Driver stating that their test model reached 110 mph in 39.2 seconds from a stop. Its McPherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension keep the ride smooth and comfortable. The fuel economy for the Encore is an EPA-estimated combined 26 and 27 mpg for the all-wheel and front-wheel-drive versions, respectively.

The GX Preferred and Select trims have a 1.2-liter turbo engine and a continuously variable transmission (CVT), delivering 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. The Essence trim has a 1.3-liter engine that produces 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. This engine, which you can also get for the Essence trim, is also mated to a CVT. The GX has an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of 30 mpg and an acceleration time of 31.2 seconds to reach 100 mph, according to the tests performed by Car and Driver.

Interiors

The Encore features a stylish and functional interior. Its armrests and dash pad are soft-touch, and the flush-mounted touch screen and jewel-colored accents add a touch of elegance. One highlight is the layout of the front seat, with its straightforward controls, high bolstering, and adjustable headrests that provide an excellent level of comfort. You can take advantage of Buick’s Interior Protection Package, which includes all-weather floor mats and a carpeted cargo mat, to keep the interior of your Encore in tip-top shape.

The Encore GX also has a spacious and comfortable cabin with a few added features. All trims sport a leather-wrapped steering wheel, satin silver and chrome shift knob, and interior lighting that give the vehicle an upscale feel. There are numerous comfort and convenience features that are either standard or available depending on the trim you choose, such as:

  • A 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.
  • An eight-way power-adjustable front passenger seat.
  • An all-weather cargo mat, floor mats, and liners.
  • Single- or dual-zone climate control.
  • Heated and ventilated front seats.
  • Leather seat trims.
  • A sport pedal kit.

Infotainment and Connectivity Features

Both the 2022 Encore and the 2023 Encore GX come with a wealth of technologies that make the driving experience even better. Standard features for the 2022 Encore include a 7-inch touch screen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capabilities, Bluetooth connectivity, and a six-speaker sound system. Also available are a power outlet, Wi-Fi hotspot, and remote start for added convenience. A three-year OnStar and Buick Connected Services subscription is also included, as well as a complimentary three-month SiriusXM satellite radio subscription.

The latest GX model has the standard elements of the 2022 Encore, plus additional or upgraded technology that’s available depending on the trim you choose. This includes an 8-inch touch screen, 4.2-inch instrument cluster display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, built-in navigation, and wireless charging. Other tech features include a rearview camera mirror, adaptive cruise control, and a head-up display for the driver.

Safety

The 2022 Encore and the 2023 GX come standard with a suite of safety features that offer extra protection while on the road. These include automatic emergency braking, a following distance indicator, tire pressure monitoring, stability and traction control, and a rear vision camera. Some features are standard to higher GX trims or optional to base trims, such as lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and forward collision warning. All these are designed to help you monitor your surroundings and stay aware of potential hazards.

Both vehicles offer a great combination of style, comfort, technology, and safety. They’re exceptional subcompact SUVs that cater to different needs. The GX is perfect for those looking for more luxury in their ride, while the Encore offers a more affordable option with impressive performance and efficient fuel economy.
