Situated along the banks of the Potomac River, Leesylvania State Park is an ideal destination for water activities, such as kayaking, boating, jet skiing, and fishing. Offering 300 acres of recreation and historical highlights, Neabsco Regional Park delivers seemingly endless opportunities for exploration. Part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, the walkway connects to an 800-mile trail network that runs from the Potomac River to the Allegheny Mountains.

The park is also home to the Rippon Lodge Historic Site, where you can tour one of the oldest homes in Prince William County. The home was constructed in 1747 and still features some of its original furniture and decor. You can take a guided 45-minute tour of the house at select times between May and October or reserve a luncheon or picnic lunch to enjoy on the property. Rippon Lodge sits on 43 acres and includes formal gardens, a cemetery, and walking trails.

River Mill Park

River Mill Park covers just 1 acre, making it a compact little retreat. This fascinating museum experience lets you test your skills in a way that few other attractions provide. You can experience Red Teaming, a tactic that the CIA used to hunt for Osama Bin Laden, test your strength hanging from a bar for a full minute, crack secret messages, and even build gadgets. Along the way, you’ll learn fascinating stories about George Washington as the nation’s first spymaster, WWII Operation Gunnerside, the failed CIA Bay of Pigs operation, and more. Dumbarton Oaks

Dumbarton Oaks sits on a gorgeous estate in Washington, D.C.’s historic Georgetown neighborhood. The museum features a stunning collection of Byzantine and Pre-Columbian art assembled by the founders and original collectors Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss. Mildred began collecting rare books, watercolors, textiles, and prints as a teenager. After her marriage, Mildred continued to acquire pieces alongside her husband, Robert. The collection soon expanded to include 17th and 18th-century furnishings, Western medieval tapestries, and French Gothic sculptures. 

The couple purchased Dumbarton Oaks in 1920 and immediately began planning for the Music Room that would house a large part of their collection. The Blisses’ wanted each aspect of the space, featuring original floors and ceilings, to reflect inspiration from Baroque and Renaissance influences. Visitors can experience the immersive Renaissance character of the Music Room to this day. 

The museum also features eight galleries, including the Rare Book Gallery and Reading Room. Beyond the museum’s walls, you can explore the meticulously landscaped gardens designed by Mildred and landscape gardener Beatrix Jones Farrand. You can stroll the terrace Green Garden, greenhouse Orangery, lush Rose Garden, shady Arbor Terrace, elegant Fountain Terrace, elaborate Pebble Garden, shady Beech Terrace, ivied Urn Terrace, and much more. This immersive retreat is often overlooked amid D.C.’s better-known museums, but it deserves a long afternoon.

National Bonsai and Penjing Museum

A bonsai is a distinctive ornamental tree or shrub kept in a pot that purposely dwarfs its growth. Penjing is the Chinese art of artistically forming miniature trees, plants, and landscapes. The National Bonsai and Penjing Museum celebrates this unique botanical art form. Housed on the grounds of the U.S. National Arboretum, it might be easy to overlook this museum, but its beauty will inevitably enchant you when you visit.

The first bonsai museum in the world, this destination strives to highlight the many faces of these fascinating plants. The museum includes the Japanese, Chinese, North American, and Viewing Stones collections. It also encompasses several pavilions, courtyards, and gardens that beg you to unwind and leisurely enjoy a stroll. The Japanese and North American collections each feature 63 trees. In the Chinese collection, you’ll find an additional 36 trees.

The Viewing Stones Collection highlights a distinct form of natural art. The stones represent different forms of nature, so you can picture an entire landscape when looking over several stones artfully arranged together. This peaceful and inspiring museum draws admiring adults and children alike.

National Building Museum

The National Building Museum is housed within a fascinating structure with a rich history all its own. The building originally served as the Pension Bureau, where 1,500 clerks would sort through the pension claims from the Union Army after the Civil War. The structure was intended not only as a functional workspace but also as a hall of records and a memorial structure. Its 75-foot columns, 1,200-foot terra cotta frieze, and Italian Renaissance Revival architecture create an imposing presence.

The building has special accommodations suited to its purposes, such as sloping steps to help disabled veterans navigate the space and a system of rails to move baskets of documents from one part of the building to another.

Today, you can still view many of these elements in what has become the National Building Museum. Current exhibitions explore Notre Dame de Paris, the towers of the World Trade Center, photographer Alan Karchmer, and more. The Play Work Build exhibit even draws children in to experience the world of architecture through interactive activities and imaginative play.

Acadia’s AT4 trim comes next in the lineup at $43,100 before options. GMC created the Acadia AT4 to compete with other off-road capable midsize SUVs. As a result, you get aggressive tires wrapping the 17-inch alloy wheels and a rugged trim-exclusive exterior to go with standard all-wheel drive (AWD). The top-tier Acadia Denali trim features all the elevated comfort plus a sharp exterior style befitting its premium status. The MSRP begins at $48,300 for the Denali, but you can quickly add to that with two trim-exclusive option packages. Read on for more details on each trim level.

2023 GMC Acadia SLE

GMC equipped the SLE with a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine and a nine-speed automatic transmission. As a result, this powertrain produces 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The Acadia SLE comes in a capable front-wheel-drive (FWD) platform, or you can add AWD for more traction and control. The FWD has an EPA-estimated 25 mpg, and the AWD version rates slightly lower at 24 mpg. With either option, the SLE can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.

A standard 8-inch touch screen runs all your infotainment and comes pre-loaded with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth technology. You can connect your smartphone wirelessly or through the data port. You have five USB ports to keep everyone’s phones charged.

Premium cloth upholstery comes standard, as do the second-row captain’s chairs. However, you can switch out the captain’s chairs for a bench seat to get seven seats at no additional cost. In addition, you can add the Elevation Package to get a Black grille insert and surround, Black mirror caps, and Gloss Black roof rails. The Elevation package also includes 20-inch Gloss Black aluminum wheels wrapped in all-season tires.

2023 GMC Acadia SLT

The SLT comes standard with a 2.0-liter engine, or you can opt for a potent 3.6-liter V-6 engine capable of 310 horsepower, 271 lb-ft of torque, and a 4,000-pound towing capacity. Plus, you have AWD as an option, and it gets good fuel economy with a combined rating of 22 mpg with the FWD version and 21 mpg with the AWD option.

Standard exterior features on the Acadia SLT include roof rails, fog lights, and a hands-free liftgate. Inside, you enjoy a power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery, and heated seats. Technology improvements provide a Bose premium audio system with eight speakers, a navigation system, remote start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a household-style power outlet in the second row.

2023 GMC Acadia AT4

If you like leaving the pavement behind, the AT4 may be the one for you. It features a V-6 engine and an AWD system specifically tuned for the AT4 for off-road performance as standard equipment. When properly equipped, the AT4 can tow up to 4,000 pounds. In addition, the trim-exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in rugged all-terrain tires provide better traction over varying surfaces and through tough weather.

A traction select system with off-road mode also comes standard on the AT4. In addition to the standard suite of driver-assist tech on every Acadia, the AT4 adds hill descent control and hill hold assist to further aid you in your off-road adventures. Premium leather in Jet Black with Kalahari accents adds signature style to the interior.

2023 GMC Acadia Denali

The top-tier Acadia Denali trades the off-road exterior features of the AT4 for upscale chrome grille and 20-inch Ultra-Bright machined aluminum wheels. However, you still get the standard V-6 engine that’s capable of towing 4,000 pounds with the right trailer equipment. You’ll love the refined interior featuring heated and ventilated front seats and heated second-row seats. Premium leather upholstery, power-adjustable front and second-row seats, and memory functions for the driver’s seat add comfort and convenience.

In-vehicle tech includes a fully digital driver information screen, a wireless charging pad, and a 6-inch head-up display that projects critical driving data onto the windshield before you. The Technology Package, only available on the Denali trim, offers a surround view camera system that uses multiple cameras to render a bird’s-eye view of your Acadia Denali. This package also adds adaptive cruise control, enhanced automatic emergency braking, and a digital rearview mirror.

Choosing the Technology Package also allows you to opt for the Ultimate Package. This package adds a panoramic sunroof, towing extras, and adaptive suspension dampers. This last feature monitors all four wheels and adjusts the suspension every millisecond to smooth out road imperfections.
