PERFORMANCE

The Sierra 1500 is available with four powerful engine options, each of them suited to a different type of truck driver. The base turbocharged four-cylinder engine puts out 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque. It's a good choice if you intend to spend most of your time on the road and performing some light towing tasks.

If you're planning on doing some serious towing, you'll want to choose from one of the three remaining engines. The 3.0-liter turbo-diesel six-cylinder unit puts out 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Then, there are two V-8s to consider: a smaller 5.3-liter unit that churns out 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque and a larger 6.2-liter monster capable of 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.

The Sierra's maximum towing capacity of 13,200 pounds is provided by the turbo-diesel engine. The top payload capacity in the cargo bed is 2,240 pounds, but you'll only achieve that number in the base Pro trim with the longest cargo bed.

Fuel economy in the Sierra 1500 varies considerably depending on the engine you choose. The largest V-8 gets a combined 17 mpg. By contrast, the turbo-diesel can manage up to 30 mpg on the highway and 23 mpg on city roads. The base four-cylinder gets 19 mpg in the city and 22 mpg at highway speeds.

Sierra 1500 Trims

You can choose from eight trims in the 2023 Sierra 1500. It may be best to decide on the engine, cargo bed, and cab you want first before looking at the trims because not all trims are offered with the same options.

Pro

The Pro Trim is offered with the four-cylinder engine or the smaller V-8 as an optional upgrade. Inside, you get cloth upholstery. You also benefit from remote keyless entry.

SLE

The SLE trim gains a larger infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. You also get GM's MultiPro tailgate, which can open in six different configurations.

Elevation

The Elevation gives you the option to add more comfortable bucket seats in the front row. You also have the option of a secure safe for the central console and wireless device charging for your phone.

SLT

The SLT offers optional four-wheel drive, memory settings for the driver's seat, and a power-adjustable passenger seat. You can add heated rear seats and ventilated front seats as optional extras.

AT4

Appropriately for its off-roading focus, the AT4 has standard four-wheel drive, skid plates, hill descent control, and a heavy-duty air filter. Other standard features include a two-speed transfer case and an improved suspension.

Denali

The Denali is all about luxury. It has standard ventilated front seats, a bed-view camera, and a premium seven-speaker stereo.

AT4X

The AT4X builds on the AT4's capabilities with 18-inch all-terrain tires, an off-roading suspension, and locking front and rear differentials. It also has a 2-inch lift kit.

Denali Ultimate

The top trim in the lineup offers GM's SuperCruise autonomous driving aid. It also has standard four-wheel drive and all the interior luxuries you could wish for.

Carbon Pro Edition

This isn't a trim but rather a special version of the Sierra 1500 available with the AT4 or Denali. CarbonPro Edition models include several unique features, such as the use of a carbon composite material in the cargo bed and some styling upgrades.

Technology

In its standard setup, the Sierra 1500 boasts a 7-inch touch screen and a six-speaker stereo. The infotainment system is also equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which ensures smartphone compatibility. If you're looking for more tech, you can add a large 13.4-inch display, opt for a premium 12-speaker stereo, and add useful features, such as a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless device charging, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

There's also a long list of standard safety features in this full-size GMC pickup. These features include forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and a rear-seat reminder. Highway drivers benefit from lane-keep assist and lane departure warning, while the Teen Driver setting lets you control how secondary drivers use your truck. Optional upgrades include adaptive cruise control and the SuperCruise system, which allows for autonomous driving on some stretches of highway.

INTERIOR & EXTERIOR FEATURES

Aside from its rugged, attention-grabbing design, the Sierra 1500 offers plenty of exterior features that serve to make it an asset when you pack up for adventure. The cargo bed boasts an impressive amount of volume that puts the pressure on its rivals, and its MultiPro Tailgate offers six different functions to help you load and unload the bed with ease.

Inside the cabin, the Sierra 1500 is just as impressive. With generous front headroom and legroom and available amenities like heated seats and leather upholstery, the Sierra 1500 is as comfortable as it is powerful.
