Woodbridge, Virginia, is popular for its quaint residential feel and easy accessibility to Washington, D.C. But it’s far more than just a sleepy suburb. Woodbridge offers a wealth of highlights all its own. Whether you’re looking for an exciting date destination, a chic luncheon spot, or a fun place to spend the day with your family, you’ll find plenty of local options. Here at Koons Woodbridge Buick GMC, we’ve rounded up our top picks for fun around the Woodbridge area to share with you.

Explore Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge covers 642 picturesque acres, including forests, fields, a 2.7-acre pond, and a freshwater marsh with a floating boardwalk. Interpretive kiosks and an educational visitor center will help you learn more about the wildlife and ecology of this stunning spot. You’ll even find a photography blind where you can hide from the native birds and animals to observe them better. Wildlife viewing is best in the early morning; you may spot resident deer, turkeys, osprey, great blue herons, bald eagles, and more.

If you want to take on a unique adventure, play the Agents of Discovery game on your smartphone and follow the prompts to complete one of two missions at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. It’s a great way to get your kids engaged in the fun while you’re outside exploring.

You can fish in Marumsco Creek for largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, sucker, and pumpkinseed. The refuge also hosts a white-tailed deer hunt in November and December to help with population management. Trails close during hunting season, but you’ll find plenty of gravel paths for easy exploration the rest of the year. You can take to the trails on snowshoes or cross-country skis in winter. And Occoquan Bay also features a 2-mile driving loop to enjoy a tour of the park by car.

Enjoy Lunch at Rippon Lodge

The historic Rippon Lodge is one of the oldest homes in Prince William County. Constructed in 1747, the home originally housed the Blackburn family, who grew wheat and tobacco in the area. The house passed through the hands of several families before the Ellis family renovated it around 1923, giving it the Colonial Revival style preserved to this day. In 1952, Admiral Richard Blackburn Black purchased the property. As a descendant of the home’s original builder, Admiral Black brought Rippon Lodge back to its original family.

Admiral Black’s daughter sold the home to Prince William County in 2000, and it’s been a beloved local destination in the decades since. The grounds, trails, and gardens are all open to visitors. One of the best ways to experience Rippon Lodge is with an elegant luncheon. For $30 a person, you’ll enjoy a filling catered lunch followed by a 45-minute house tour and a 45-minute grounds tour. You must have a group of 10 or more and reserve your spot at least four weeks in advance.

Everyone in your party will enjoy the same menu you select from four menu options at the time of booking. Choose from chunky chicken salad, pasta salad, and artisan rolls; fiesta tortilla wraps with fresh fruit; salad topped with cranberries, goat cheese, and chicken with artisan rolls; or salmon, quinoa salad, vegetables, fresh fruit, and rolls. All meals also have a dessert option.
